Do you have an HSA plan? A Health Savings Account (HSA) allows consumers to pay for qualified medical expenses with pre-tax dollars. You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for exercise, including personal training, if it is a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease).

You may want to ask your physician for an exercise prescription at your next annual physical, and talk to your benefits plan manager or human resources manager since the specifics vary from plan to plan. If you don’t go the HSA route, you may still be able to include personal training services directly in your medical deductions on Schedule A of your tax return.
